Background of the Study

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) represent a significant yet often marginalized group in Nigeria, particularly in regions affected by insurgency, communal conflicts, or natural disasters. Adamawa State, including Yola North Local Government Area (LGA), has experienced significant displacement due to the insurgency in the northeast of Nigeria. While these displaced persons face substantial hardships, they also contribute to the local economy through their involvement in small businesses, agriculture, and other local economic activities. Despite their challenges, IDPs bring resilience and economic dynamism to the regions they migrate to (Dahiru & Bala, 2024).

The economic contributions of IDPs, however, remain under-examined. This study aims to assess the role of IDPs in the local economy of Yola North LGA, exploring their involvement in economic activities, their labor force participation, and their impact on the region’s socio-economic landscape. By understanding their contributions, this research can provide insights for policymakers in designing more inclusive development strategies that incorporate the needs and potential of IDPs.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although IDPs contribute to the local economies in many ways, their economic roles often remain overlooked in development policies and local planning. The influx of IDPs into Yola North has led to changes in the local labor market, housing demands, and consumption patterns. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies that assess the actual contributions of IDPs to the local economy, as well as the challenges they face in contributing to economic activities. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating the economic contributions of IDPs to the local economy in Yola North LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the economic contributions of IDPs to local businesses and agricultural activities in Yola North.

  2. To evaluate the role of IDPs in labor force participation and local job creation in Yola North.

  3. To examine the socio-economic challenges and opportunities for IDPs in contributing to the local economy.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do IDPs contribute to local businesses and agricultural activities in Yola North?

  2. What role do IDPs play in the local labor market and job creation in Yola North?

  3. What socio-economic challenges and opportunities exist for IDPs in contributing to the local economy?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. IDPs contribute positively to local businesses and agricultural productivity in Yola North.

  2. IDPs play a significant role in local labor markets and job creation in Yola North.

  3. IDPs face specific socio-economic challenges that hinder their full contribution to the local economy.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are significant as they provide a better understanding of the economic role of IDPs in Yola North, which can help inform local development policies. By recognizing the potential economic contributions of IDPs, local governments can create more inclusive policies that support their integration into the local economy, promote their participation in economic activities, and address the challenges they face in rebuilding their lives.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Yola North Local Government Area in Adamawa State and will examine the economic contributions of IDPs over the past five years. Limitations include the potential difficulty in obtaining reliable data from IDPs, who may be reluctant to participate in surveys due to their vulnerable status.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): Individuals or groups who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, violence, or disasters, but remain within the national borders.

  • Local Economy: The system of economic activities, including trade, agriculture, industry, and services, that sustains the livelihoods of people in a specific region.

  • Labor Force Participation: The involvement of individuals in economic activities, either through employment or self-employment.
